BIRKENHEAD Park booked their place in the final of the Cheshire Vase with a comprehensive victory over Wirral rivals New Brighton under the Upper Park floodlights on Friday evening.

Park scored three tries to build up a 17-0 advantage in the first quarter and three more touch downs in the second half stretched the final score to 36-0.

The Blues put up a spirited performance but found little going right with occasional periods of pressure bringing no reward.

But a notable first for the Hartsfield outfit saw 19-year-old Jack Coggins and his 48-year-old father Phil make their senior debuts off the bench.

A sprightly Martin O'Keefe gained the opening score for Birkenhead on seven minutes after steady pressure.

It was his first try in three years and he did not hide his delight.

Five minutes later Dave Hall weaved his way to the line with an impresive run over forty yards and himself added the extras.

In the seventeenth minute, a fine break by Adam Wellington was carried on by Jack Ashcroft before Matt Ibbotson crossed.

Stu Brown grabbed the fourth try twelve minutes into the second half after pressure from a line-out and next to breach a stretched Blues defence was Lawrence Thomas again following a throw in.

The last try say went to Sean Mooney as he out smarted the Brighton rearguard in the dying moments.

The Hall conversion stretched the advantage to 36-0 which served to emphasize the two league gap between the clubs.

In the final later in the season Park will meet Altrincham Kersal or Crewe and Nantwich at a venue to be notified.

Hoylake took the derby against Port Sunlight 36-11 for a place in the last stage of the Cheshire Bowl.

Hoylake camped in the Sunlight halve from the kick-off and eventually Matt O'Neill forced his way over after 12 minutes with Alex White converting.

Jake Harris landed a penalty for the soapmen before a tap Hoylake penalty led to a Matt O'Hanlon touch down and the White goal on the half hour.

Sunlight, a league below Hoylake, showed their capabilities with an excellent running try in the 35th minute from Steve Bailey before a White penalty made it 17-8 at the half way stage.

The hosts added second-half touch downs via Dan Lewis, Tom Selby-Melic and Liam Rushworth plus two more White goals.

The only response from the losers was a 68th minute penalty by Harris.

This was a welcome win for Hoylake whose only other success this campaign came in the first round match against Bowdon.

Now they must convert the form to their league programme Their final opponents will be either Sandbach or Dukinfield.

In the third derby Oldershaw out scored Oxton Parkonians at Holm Lane to book their place in the last stage of the Cheshire Plate. It finished 33-19 to the Wallasey side.

Parkonians did manage three touch downs via Andy Smith, Ben Sadler and Martyn Sharkey with Sadler goaling twice.

The other semi-final saw Ellesmere Port easily account for Helsby 34-0.

There is a return to league action this Saturday.

Caldy take on Luctonians at Paton Field in National Two North.

There are also home engagements for Wirral against Ilkley and Birkenhead Park against Billingham in National Three North.

The end of summer time means kick-offs are now at the earlier time of 2.15pm.
