A SMART double from Dom Coddington allied to a Chris Jones effort saw Newton record a 3-2 decision at Helsby and enabled the Frankby outfit to once again assume pole position in the race for the Division One title, writes Ernie McDonald.

Vauxhall Motors took time out from their pursuit of the Division One title by engaging Abbey Hey in a keenly-contested FA Vase second-round qualifier, but despite goals from Tony Ashton and Edi Benzadoun, the Motormen went down 3-2.

Only one fixture took place in Division Three and it was celebration time for Ashville Reserves who beat Heswall Reserves 2-1 courtesy of a goal apiece from Lee Hammond and Ray Redmond. The visitors replied via Ian Colligan.

Three-goal Tom Williams was joined on the scoresheet by John Murphy as Gateacre Village went through after they won 4-2 against West Kirby and Wasps Reserves, who hit back through Matty Moores and Jack Ireland.

An epic tussle between Neston Nomads and Mossley Hill Athletic Reserves was settled in Nomads’ favour 4-3 after extra time. Richie Foulkes (3) and Dean Jones netted for Nomads with Paul Walls and Sam Gainon in reply for the losers.

Elsewhere, Mark Madden, Farshad Parvas and Kai Turner applied the finishing touches as Maghull Reserves beat Willaston 3-1. Billy New was Willaston’s scorer.

Andy Henry (2), Steve Millington, Matt Ingle and Jamie Randles chipped in with the goals as Upton AA Reserves beat Capenhurst Villa Reserves 5-3, brothers Mo and Callum Doyle and Lewis Cooper responding for Cape.

Colin Singleton netted for Newton Reserves who capitulated 6-1 at home to Marshalls Reserves.
