Ahead of Tranmere’s first local derby of the season on Saturday, the Globe spoke to Chester FC media volunteer Jeff Banks, who was heavily involved with the resurrection of the club, to gauge pre-match opinion.

What’s the feeling around Chester about the prospect of playing Tranmere Rovers this season?

I think everyone is excited about Chester facing Tranmere again, albeit in non-league football. I think everyone recalls previous meetings at both Sealand Road and Prenton Park down the years when both were Football League teams and the atmosphere would be a cracker given the short distance between the two clubs.

Tranmere provided the opposition for our friendlies in the first few years since the club reformed and we always seemed to enjoy good results against Rovers. The fans will certainly be up for the trip to Prenton Park and I'm sure there will be some great banter between the fans too.

How do you think Tranmere will fare in the National League?

Tranmere will of course be one of the pre-season favourites to go back up, just like Bristol Rovers did last season, but it's not always so straight forward to get back into the Football League, especially at the first attempt.

There are some great ex-FL clubs in the National League, with the likes of Grimsby, Macclesfield and Kidderminster looking for a return, but even the part timers in the league performed well last year including Dover who surprised many with their form. Then you add in the likes of Wrexham who have been stuck in non league football for some time now.

If Tranmere start with the mindset that they will walk the league then that will backfire on them. We've seen that happen with clubs before, and end up staying down five or six years until they finally managed to get back up.

Any danger men at Chester that Rovers should be worried about?

Chester have strengthened very well in the summer, with the likes of Ross Hannah coming in from Grimsby. Ross is a proven scorer in non-league football, and together with the likes of Craig Hobson could cause some problems for defenders this season.

Craig Mahon earned rave reviews last season with his performances and is definitely a star in the making and then there is of course John Rooney, who likes to get forward himself as he proved in the friendly against Liverpool's Under 21s pre-season, scoring a hat trick.

All in all a positive season ahead hopefully for Chester, with the aim being making the play-offs I'm sure, which will be a sign of further progress at our fan owned club that has done extremely well since reforming in the Evo-Stik First Division North, five years ago.
