The Birkenhead second division team were given a 24-point start against their first division opponents but by the end of the evening they had extended this to a 58-point win.

Albany made a good start with Ian Sharp recording a 21-9 win but that was as good as it got and Upton had nine winners with both Rob Smith and Norman Howells recording single figure wins.

The Wallasey Association’s President’s Cup Final at Upton Victory Hall saw the first division team Hoylake Central turn over a 78-point handicap against a game Queens team from the third division to take the trophy.

Though Brian Francis had a superb 21-9 win for the Queens it was not enough to prevent the Hoylake team from winning by a margin of 15 points. Hoylake Central had six single-figure winners with Nigel Smith’s 21-5 the pick of the bunch.

Merseyside Veterans’ team finished second to a very strong Cheshire squad in the National Veterans’ Team Championships played in Golbourne on Thursday.
