The summer’s five-a-side futsal action is well under way at the Oval Leisure Centre

Last week the Oval played host to two cup competitions featuring local futsal league clubs.

The first was an invitation tournament featuring top Wirral outfit Greasby, Welsh Elite league team Saltney, the event sponsors Tranmere Victoria Old Boys, and guest side Saints.

In a highly-entertaining first semi-final, Greasby finally went down 7-4 to the Saints, while in the second semi-final packed with exciting, attractive futsal Saltney finally took the honours 3-2.

The Old Boys then came through a tough, challenging third and fourth place play-off against Greasby, whilst the Saints’ outstanding technical skill and pace proved enough to edge out the Saltney challenge in a final packed with incidents.

The second event was based on a league format, where the Old Boys and the Saints joined forces to play against four more local league sides, Bebington Bilbao, Tranmere Victoria Futsal Club, Double O Oval and Wirral Subway.

With each team playing four 15 minute matches the action was quick and free flowing and provided a great advert for futsal in the Wirral.

In the end it was the Saints/Old Boys team, who again provided an excellent example of skill, technique and good sportsmanship, who edged out a strong Bebington Bilbao team into second place.

Dave Simmonds, community sports development officer said “Futsal is a fast paced, attractive and skilful sport, available to anyone of any age who loves football.”
