WIRRAL'S two remaining teams in the Cheshire Association's Brunner Cup won their matches on Saturday and are through to the semi-finals of this year's competition.

Gladstone beat Poynton Sports 241-195 and last year's winner, Tixall, beat Rudheath Sports 240-171.

It looks more than a possibility that the two teams could contest the final again this year.

The Birkenhead Parks Team's Merit Tournament was played on the two greens in Port Sunlight on Sunday and after a good day's play the competition was won by Tixall's Nigel Hughes, who beat Danny Worral of Gladstone in the final.

The Wallasey Association's Veterans Tournament, played on Sunday on the greens at Harrison Park, was dominated by Manor Road's Dave Gilmore.

After winning through a tough match in the quarter finals against last year's champion, Harrison Park's Bill Jones, he breezed through the semi-final and the final against Upton Victory Hall's Bob Hodgson and New Brighton Queens Royal's Dave Croston winning both games 21-07.

This is Dave Gilmore's second success in the Wallasey Association in a week as last Sunday, July 7, playing with New Brighton Queens Royal's Colin Saville he won the Tom Bassnett Pairs Tournament which was played in Central Park.

On Thursday the Merseyside Veterans team, which included seven Wirral players in the eight-man team, won their Area Qualifying Tournament against teams from North Lancashire, Cumbria and Lancashire.

They now go through to play in the National Finals, which take place on August 6.

The North Wirral League's Final was played on July 4. Winners were Parkfield, who retained their title, beating Bronze by just eight shots.

Next Sunday the Birkenhead and District team play their next Parks match against Greater Manchester.

The home game is taking place on the Victoria Park No 1 green (Lord Napier's home green) and the away game will be at Tonge in Middleton.

Both matches get under way at 2pm.

I have been asked by the Manor Road Club to remind his many friends that Les Jones's funeral is taking place at Landican this Monday (July 20) at 11am.
