A WIRRAL golf club will hold a charity tournament in memory of a former captain this weekend.

Taking place at Bidston Golf Club this Saturday, July 11, the event is in honour of Guy Cockroft and will raise funds for leukeamia and lymphona research.

Guy, who was captain in 2011, was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins B-Cell Lymphona eight years ago, and fought this successfully following a gruelling course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

In May last year, he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukeamia and went through more gruelling treatment and was given the all clear in the September.

Unfortunately, the leukeamia returned in December and he sadly lost his battle in January, one week before his 75th birthday.

Guy had been a member of the Boys Brigade and an avid Evertonian. He refereed for the Birkenhead Saturday and Sunday football leagues becoming chairman of the Birkenhead Sunday league. He had lived and worked in South Africa for five years.

Paying tribute, Steve Jones - who captained Bidston Golf Club during its 2014/15 season - told the Globe: "Guy had planned a charity day to raise funds for leukeamia and lymphona when he thought he'd beaten it, his wife Chris, in memory of Guy, has continued with the organisation together with Bidston Golf Club.

"The club is proud to hold the event.

"Guy was a keen golfer and joined Bidston Golf Club, he was elected to the position of club Captain in 2011, one of his proudest moments of his golfing career.

"He was a popular captain representing Bidston with pride and dignity.

"Being elected captain he became a member of the Society of Liverpool Golf Captains, he was a very popular member amongst his fellow 2011 captains of the other 26 clubs affiliated to the Society.

"Guy enjoyed caravanning and was the most wonderful husband and father."

Saturday's tournament will feature teams of four that can be made up of male, female and junior golfers, costing £50 per team.

There will be a selection of excellent prizes that have been donated and all proceeds will go to the charity.
