THE Wallasey Association's Individual Merit Tournament was held on the greens in Harrison Park on Sunday.

After a good day's competition the winner was New Brighton Queens Royal's Paul Saville who beat Harrison Park's Tommy Davis in a tight final.

Saville had a fairly comfortable win over West Kirby Victoria's Brian Somerville in the quarters and he then beat New Brighton Quarry Viking's Chris Barton in the semi final.

Davis played brilliantly to beat NB Quarry Viking's Owen Doyle and then just came through a great semi final game against Eddie Dutton of NB Queens Royal.

Saville held a lead throughout the final but Davis always fought hard and it was only from 17-16 that Saville managed to win through to his third Wallasey Merit title.

Results:

Semi Finals: P. Saville 21, C. Barton 13; T. Davis 21, E. Dutton 19. Final: Saville 21, Davis 17.

Tixall are making a determined effort to retain the Cheshire Association's Brunner Cup which they won last year.

On Saturday they beat the Castle Private Club by a big margin, 239-178, in the second round on a poor green at Halton RBL. Their best performers were Robbie Hall, 21-07, and Anthony Thompson, 21-08.

Gladstone also made progress to the third round with a walk over but unfortunately Heswall RBL suffered a narrow defeat, 212-204, to Comberbach on the green in Manley.

Last Monday, May 4, the annual New Brighton Classic Tournament was played on the greens at New Brighton Cricket and Bowls Club.

In the final he had a commanding victory over another Welsh player, John Bonetti, of Wrexham.

The Wirral Junior Handicap Tournaments were played last week at Cammell Lairds.

The winner of the under 18's was Zoe Stratton who beat Liam Rhodes 21-16 in the final.

In the under 14 section Michael Cavanagh took the title for the second time beating Lewis Bullen 21-09 in the final.

Michael is still only eight years old and clearly has a tremendous future in the game.

Next Sunday, May 17, The Birkenhead and District Parks team have their second game of the season when they take on Central Lancashire.

The home leg is being played at Heswall RBL, 2pm start, and the team would really appreciate support as they try to make progress.

After last Friday's washout let us hope the weather for the rest of the season is a little more kind.
