FOLLOWING last week's heavy defeat at Sheffield in a quickly rearranged game, Wirral returned to winning ways with a number of players returning to the side, against Billingham.

The first score did not come until the 49th minute when a quickly taken penalty released winger Ali Baker to score, with James Annetts adding the conversion.

This score gave Billingham renewed determination and a series of penalties and good play gave them a 5m line out where their forwards gained possession and Anthony Jackson was pushed over to score, the conversion was missed.

The scene was set for a tight finish as Wirral used the wind to their advantage and quick play from a penalty close to the opposition line sent captain Craig Harvey over.

Although the conversion was missed, the game was put out Billingham’s reach two minutes later when James Annetts landed a penalty to increase the lead to 15-5 in the 79th minute.

The final minutes saw Billingham pressing but a loose ball and a grubber kick saw Adam Sheldon outpace the defence to score under the posts to give Wirral a 22-5 win. This win improves Wirral’s position in the league as they look to ensure their place in the National League format.
