CALDY warmed their hardy supporters with a five-star five try show on a bitterly cold and windy afternoon at Paton Field.

It led to a 41-21 victory in National Two North League against Leicester Lions and provided sweet revenge for a 19-33 reverse earlier in the season.

It was hopefully not unlucky win number thirteen for the local side and keeps them in the top six in the division.

Sadly it was a somewhat ill-tempered affair with the Caldy cause helped when the Lions had their skipper dismissed in the third quarter for a second yellow card offence.

Dave Williams sped half the length of the pitch for an early Lions try after a kick ahead by Caldy handed their opponents possession.

Jon Boden converted but Caldy hit back with two penalties in quick succession by Richard Vasey and took the lead at the start of the second quarter as Gavin Roberts weaved his way over and Vasey converted.

It became 13-14 ten minutes later with a fine Lions try by Steve Cross goaled by Boden but Caldy had the half-time advantage with the pack driving over from a line for a Colin Campbell touch down with the extras from Vasey.

Caldy now with wind advantage looked to go clear but it was not until the final quarter they added to their lead with a well taken try by Tom Banks plus the Vasey kick.

There was then a late flurry of scoring.

The home forwards drove over for converted try number four a couple of minutes later with Tom Sanders appearing at the bottom of the heap.

Leicester registered their third touch down via Devon Constant on 77 minutes with Boden adding the kick before Caldy had the last say as Stuart Cross re-acted best to a kick through by Nick Royle for the fifth try.

Vasey landed the goal for a one hundred per cent success rate on a day when he could easily have been excused for missing the target.

Wirral ground out a 12-6 win over Burnage in a defence dominated National Three North encounter at Clatterbridge and are gradually moving up the table. They are now into ninth place.

Burnage landed penalties either side of half-time to lead 6-0 but then paid dearly for sin binnings as Dan Harvey found his way over for Wirral. James Annetts added the goal.

Craig Harvey added a second try for Wirral to make it 12-6 but Burnage although facing the wind rallied well and made the Clatterbridge side defend stubbornly for victory.

Birkenhead Park stayed top of North One West as they produced a commanding display at Warrington to win 29-12.

The impressive Jack Lavin on his return to Park opened the scoring with a touch down after five minutes. Further tries followed from Rob Doolan and Joe Spencer plus both conversions by Dave Hall for a 19-0 interval lead.

Warrington with wind advantage punished the visitors with four second-half penaltes but Rob Doolan and Peter Doolan breached the home defence for further tries to ensure the bonus point for the Upper Park outfit.

There was disappointment for New Brighton as they were edged out 17-19 at Carlisle.

They collected a bonus point but are second bottom with work ahead to ensure safety.

Hoylake in South Lancashire/Cheshire One found leaders Altrincham Kersal too strong and went down 0-24 at Melrose Avenue.

The Glossop v Anselmians fixture was amongst the day's casualties.

Prenton v Collegiate in Division Two did not start but Port Sunlight played at home to Dukinfield and only just missed out 19-20.

Wallasey drew 8-8 at Congleton in Division Three wih each side scoring a try and a kick.

Oldershaw lost 5-21 away to Liverpool University. The Ellesmere port v Capenhurst and Linley v Oxton Parkonians games were called off.

There is another full league programme this Saturday, weather permitting, with some very interesting fixtures Caldy have Hull as visitors and Wirral travel to Yorkhire to take on the Tigers of Sheffield.

There are home clashes for Birkenhead Park against Kirby Lonsdale in a first v second place confrontation and New Brighton against Vale of Lune.

Other listed games include Anselmians v Douglas, Hoylake at LSH, Port Sunlight at Collegiate, Prenton at Oswestry, Ellesmere Port at Congleton, Oxton Parkonians v Liverpool University and a Wallasey v Oldershaw derby at Cross Lane.
