THE three outstanding semi-finalists for the Wirral & District FA's Senior Cup were resolved at the weekend.

It was hats off to Capenhurst Villa, who duly avenged the previous week's league drubbing at the hands of current Division One leaders, Cammell Laird Reserves 1907.

The strongly-fancied Shipbuilders were holed below the waterline, as Cape returned the compliment, with a 4-1 result, courtesy of efforts from Shaun Weaver (2), Luke Eccles and Kyle Smythe. Laird's consolation was scored by Kyle Jones.

Another shock result was provided by Division Two title contenders, Heswall, who pulled the mat from under cup holders, West Kirby with Tommy Carroll laying claim to the game's only goal.

For the second week running, in form striker, John Hedges helped himself to a hat trick, as Mallaby romped home 6-0 against Ashville.

The quartet of semi-finalists is completed by Vauxhall Motors, who recently took the scalp of Newton.

Newton themselves climbed to seventh place in Division One, after a solitary effort from Ross McDowell interrupted Mossley Hill Athletic's winning sequence.

Reigning champions, Maghull, upped the ante in the race for the title, when contributions from Mike Cummins(2)and Mike Boyle secured a 3-0 win against fourth-placed Helsby.

Division Two leaders, Rainhill Town, went seven points clear at the top after they triumphed 5-2 at Hale Reserves.

Colin Lynch (2), Matt Dooling, Matt Farrell and Dave Monteith were on the mark, while third-placed Redgate Rovers maintained interest, following a 4-1 decision over West Kirby Reserves.

Paul Leamy, Jake Connelly, Craig Blackwell and Mike Lowe obliged for the visitors.

Mossley Hill Ath. Res. celebrated their first league win of the season, after Brinsley Bailey, Luke Wynne and Jack Shaw made the score sheet in a 3-0 victory at Bebington Ath. Fourth placed Gateacre Village had John Murphy and Spencer Douglas on target in a narrow 2-1 win against Prescot Cable Res.

South Liverpool Res, remained unbeaten at the top of Division Three, but forfeited two points, after a smart double from Chris Williams was negated by replies from Chester Nomads Res' Dave Wilson and Alan Bond.

Nearest Rivals, Kirkby Town Railway, won 5-1 against Mersey Royal, inspired by a John Humphries hat trick, while Bootle Res. stayed in the promotion mix, after a four-goal salvo from Jackson Ellis sparked an 8-0 win over Marshalls Res.

Despite a goal from Gary Handley, Upton AA Reserves capitulated 2-1 to replies from Everton PLH's Dean Jones and Aaron Thornton.

In the Wirral FA Amateur Cup second round, Neston Nomads progressed after they overcame Woodchurch 3-1 courtesy of a goal apiece from Rob Cotterall, Paul Ellison and John Lloyd.

Ashville Res. went down 2-1 at Shaftesbury but Willaston profited after they won 4-2 on penalties after 90 minutes and extra time had produced a stalemate at Porkys Pantry.

Danny Higginson struck twice, as Division Three minnows, Capenhurst Villa Res. accounted for Division Two counterparts, Vauxhall Motors Res, 2-1.

A rampant Upton AA afforded little mercy to Uberlube in the Chester Senior Cup 1st round and had three goal hot-shot, Adam Thelwell-Wilson in top form in Saturday's 9-0 rout.

Elsewhere, rival Division One sides, Blacon YC and Chester Nomads went through, after they accounted for Lodge Bar and Tarporley Vics respectively.
