TRANMERE Rovers face Carlisle United in the Johnstone's Paints Trophy Nothern section second round at Prenton Park tonight.

The match, kicking off at 7.30pm, will be the fifth time the two clubs have met in cup competitions.

Rovers hold a three wins to two advantage, though Carlisle won the only other meeting between the two in the Football League Trophy, clinching an 11-10 penalty shoot out victory in 2005-06 after a 0-0 draw in normal time.

In 2001-02 Jason Koumas netted a hat-trick in a 6-1 FA Cup win for Rovers at Prenton Park, with Jason Price, Stuart Barlow and Steve Yates joining him on the scoresheet.

The first ever cup tie between the two clubs was a 3-0 victory for Jack Carr's Tranmere in 1935 thanks to goals from Billy Woodward (2) and Fred Urmson.

Looking ahead to tonight's game, Rovers' manager Rob Edwards said: "It's a good competition, with a chance to play at Wembley.

"We have to be sure we're ready for Carlisle and give them a good game."
