MEMBERS of three Wirral crown green bowling clubs battled it out in a three-way competition that has raised more than £600 for North West Cancer Research.

The competition for the coveted John Lees Cup, which has been awarded every year since 1933, was contested by members of Oxton Conservative Club, Manor Road Club and New Brighton Quarry Vikings.

The event raised £623 for the charity through donations and a various fundraising activities.

Helen Dring, the charity's vice president attended the event to accept the cheque from Roy McGunnigall, chairman of Oxton Conservative Club and secretary of the John Lees Cup, on behalf of the charity.

Helen said: "I’d like to personally thank all of the clubs involved and everyone who’s donated for their great efforts and generosity.

"Without the help and support of the people of Wirral, important regional research into cancer would not be able to continue."

The event is held at a different club each year with this year’s event being held at Manor Road Bowling Club. This time 30 individuals battled it out for the trophy with Matthew Roberts of Oxton Conservative Club being crowned this year’s winner.

The Wallasey Committee is one of over twenty in the North West and Wales assisted by a network of volunteers who cover Merseyside, Cumbria, Lancashire, Cheshire and North Shropshire.
