TRANMERE Rovers were held to their second goalless draw in four days as they hosted Newport County at Prenton Park.

Manager Rob Edwards named the same team which started at Hartlepool, but was forced into an early change on ten minutes.

An injury to Matt Hill meant the full-back had to come off and was replaced by Marcus Holness, with Danny Holmes moving to left-back and Janoi Donacien to right-back.

Tranmere came close to breaking the deadlock after 25 minutes when  Abdulai Bell-Baggie shook off his marker on the halfway line and played a ball to Power who in turn found Richards 12 yards out, but the striker dragged his shot narrowly wide.

Five minutes before the break saw good link-up play between Cole Stockton and Eliot Richards, who forced a good save from the Newport goalie from 18 yards.

On 50 minutes, Newport worked the ball out to the right edge of the penalty box with Zebroski who dragged a low shot across the face of the goal and out for a goal kick.

The next action was at the other end. Stockton received the ball from Baggie 20 yards out and he turned and fired in a powerful right foot shot just wide of the target.

With 20 minutes remaining, Edwards made his second change with Jason Koumas replacing Max Power in midfield, with the final change seeing George Donnelly coming on for his home debut a couple of minutes later in place of Stockton up front.

The manager was satisfied with his side's performance and felt all that was missing was a goal: "The players gave everything for the club and the shirt, the missing thing was putting the ball in the net.

“We had three or four really good chances in the first ten minutes.

"We ran out of a bit of steam, brought Jason and George on but by then it looked like it was going to be a draw.

"We've got to win more games, but we are improving. Moving the football that's as well as we've played.

"The players have set the standard but we need to be more clinical.

"It was always going to be about us getting there gradually. We've got lots of new players, a new manager and lots of new things at the club.

“We're slowly getting there and I see a bit of belief in the players and a bit of fight and we can launch something from that.”

The result saw Rovers drop a place in the League Two table to 15th position.

They’re at home again on Saturday when Exeter City make the journey to Prenton Park.
