TRANMERE Rovers face a tough challenge on Saturday as League Two table-toppers Morecambe  travel to Prenton Park.

Manager Rob Edwards was critical of his defence last week after Rovers let slip a two-goal first half lead to lose 3-2 against Cheltenham Town.

Edwards said the result "reminded me that the task is going to be a bit more difficult than I thought it was going to be" after victory against Wycombe Wanderers.

He is determined to strenghten his squad, but revealed attempts this week to sign new talent have been thwarted.

The manager disclosed he is ideally looking for a player to join Rovers on a long-term loan.

He said: "We need a couple of players who will add to the depth and quality of the squad.

"We've looked around and identified players but have been told no, unfortunately. Yesterday was a frustrating day.

"Good players are hard to attract, lots of clubs want them.

“There are lots of young players around playing under-21 football and the key is to identify the ones who can deal with playing the nitty-gritty of League Two football.

"At the moment we'd ideally be looking at a long-term loan.

"We'd like a left foot in midfield and someone who can add power down that side. We've come up with a couple of names and were really close to bringing someone in."

Saturday's clash with Morecambe will be only the third meeting between the two clubs and the first in the league.

The two previous matches have taken place in the Football League Trophy and both at Prenton Park.

A goal from Jamie Burns gave Morecambe a 1-0 win in 2007-08, while Ryan Shotton scored the only goal of the game a season later.

Morecambe are undefeated in their first four outings of the 2014-15 League Two season.Tranmere have yet to secure a home win and are 15th in the table.

Meanhwile, Tranmere's Owain Fon Williams has been named in the Wales squad for their Euro 2016 qualifier against Andorra in September.

The goalkeeper is one of three uncapped players called up by Chris Coleman for the match which takes place on Tuesday, September 9, in Andorra La Vella.

The fixture is Wales' first in their six team group which also includes Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belgium, Israel and Cyprus.
