He was educated at Calday Grange Grammar School where he learned his rugby. Steve furthered his sporting passion with the then Old Caldeians.

He later switched to New Brighton and made 423 appearances for the club, which is the fourth highest on record.

He captained the Hartsfield club from 1976 to 1978 and returned for a second spell as leader in 1984/85.

Steve represented Cheshire over an eight-year period from 1976 and also played for the North of England.

His wife Sandra died five years ago. He is survived by his daughter Hannah and his brother Ian who was another New Brighton and Cheshire stalwart over many years.

Steve was personally known to your correspondent. He was a big man with a big heart and was always kind, courteous and caring. He will be sadly missed.
