ON Saturday, Wirral and District's Harold Taylor Veteran's Championship was held on the excellent Albany Club green and the winner was Higher Tranmere Vets' Peter Webster who followed his father Ben in being successful in this tournament.

In the final, Webster held off a late surge by Manor Road's Andy Wainwright to triumph 15-10.

On his way to the final Webster beat Tixall's Alan Popham in the quarter-finals and he then had a surprisingly one-sided victory over another Tixall player, Tony Cavanagh.

Wainwright had got the better of Ian Hawes of Hoylake Marine Gardens in the quarters and he was then too good for homster Fred Beacall in the semi-final.

Results:

Quarter-finals: T Cavanagh 15, V Peers 06; P Webster 15, A Popham 13; F Beacall 15, G Dewhurst 13; A Wainwright 15, I Hawes 10. Semi-finals: Webster 15, Cavanagh 05; Wainwright 15, Beacall 08. Final: Webster 15, Wainwright 10.
