THE Wallasey Merit Tournament took place on Sunday at Harrison Park.

After a very close and exciting final the winner was New Brighton Queens Royal's Geoff Lynch who beat West Kirby Victoria's Matthew Gilmore.

In the semi-finals Lynch, the beaten finalist in 2013, and Gilmore both had fairly straightforward wins over Manor Road's Barry Smith and New Brighton Quarry Viking's John Harrison respectively.

Though Gilmore made the better start in the final Lynch fought back from 17-13 down and held his nerve to just pip Gilmore 21-20 to take his second Wallasey Merit title and with it the opportunity to enter the Merseyside Champion of Champions Tournament in 2015.

Results: Quarter-finals: M Gilmore 21, C Barton 11; J Harrison 21, L Henderson 12; G Lynch 21, B Leonard 17; B Smith 21, P Saville 10.

Semi-finals: Gilmore 21, Harrison 07; Lynch 21, Smith 10. Final: Lynch 21, Gilmore 20.

It was a local Wirral player, Robbie Fitzpatrick, who won this year's New Brighton Classic on Monday, May 5.

The Tixall/West Kirby Victoria player clinched the title at the New Brighton Cricket and Bowling Club when he beat Cliffe Massey from Liverpool 21-09 in the final.

In his semi final match Massey had beaten Fitzpatrick's club mate Matthew Gilmore 21-11 while in the other semi final game Fitzpatrick had been too good on the day for young Steven Glover of New Brighton Quarry Vikings winning 21-10.
