Wirral Globe: Motormen kick Workington into relegation Motormen kick Workington into relegation

GOALS from Steven Tames and Karl Clair gave Motors all three points in this typical end-of-season encounter at Rivacre Park.

The defeat however, confirmed Workington have now been relegated from the Conference North and they will be playing in the Evo-Stik Premier league next season.

The away side did have the better of the opening exchanges with Zac Jones having to pull off a couple of fine fingertip saves to deny Joe Jackson on 19 minutes then tipping the ball around the post following an 18-yard strike from David Lynch.

The opening goal was scored on 32 minutes when captain Tom Hannigan delivered a pinpoint 30 yards diagonal ball from the right into the feet of Steven Tames who took one touch before poking the ball past keeper Daniel Nizic from close range.

Workington grabbed an equaliser just before half-time when Ben Mckenna whipped in a dangerous corner from the left and captain Kyle May was left unmarked to head home from six yards out.

After the interval, Motors looked more threatening in the final third and got their winner on 60 minutes.

Andy Nicholas was tripped outside the area and Karl Clair stepped up and scored from 25 yards out with a free-kick which was curled around the wall and into the corner of the net.

Vauxhall substitute Tom Rutter almost grabbed a third on 81 minutes when he raced clear of the Workington defence but keeper Nizic was quick off his line and pulled off a point-blank save to deny the Motors' striker.

Vauxhall: Jones, Wainwright, Barnes, Hannigan, Nicholas, Clair, Fearnehough, Burke, Tames, Ellams (Rutter 63), Hughes (Mendes 83) Subs not used: Wright, Martindale, Christopher.

Motors’ final game of the season is this Saturday, April 26, when they host Solihull Moors. Kick-off at Rivacre Park is 3pm.
