ON a bitterly cold, windy morning in Birkenhead Park the Winter Flyers certainly lived up to its name but despite this there was yet again a good turnout of players who had come to enjoy their bowls.

After a hard series of games N. Hughes of Tixalls came through to take a well deserved win beating Cammell Laird's Dougie Briscoe in the final.

In the quarter finals Hughes beat New Brighton Quarry Viking's John Cosgrove in a tight game before having a somewhat easier win over Lever's Colin Portis.

Meanwhile Briscoe, having an excellent morning, first held his nerve to clinch a win over last week's winner John Harrison from Liverpool before he just scraped through in the semi final against Eddie Dutton who plays for New Brighton Queens Royal's.

Hughes carried his good play into to the final and ran out a fairly comfortable 21-14 winner.

Results:

Quarter finals: N. Hughes 21, J. Cosgrove 18; C. Portis 21, W. Atkinson 16; E. Dutton 21, J. Lloyd 18; D. Briscoe 21, J. Harrison 19.

Semi Finals: Hughes 21, Portis 13; Briscoe 21, Dutton 19.

Final: Hughes 21, Briscoe 14.

Correction: Last week it was stated that Craig Saville plays for Tixalls. He is a member of the Gladstone Club not Tixalls: Apologies to all concerned.
