HOCKEY: Neston South enjoy victory
2:25pm Tuesday 22nd October 2013 in Sport
SATURDAY saw another victory for Neston South Wirral Hockey 1XI when they took on Stockport Bramhall away and won 6-1, writes Harry Bush.
The first 20 minutes, however, told a different story, with the Manchester side having plenty of chances in front of goal.
Neston's captain and keeper Richard Lowry made a set of great saves to keep the score level.
Schoolboy Steven Halfhead soon changed things and scored a wellplaced deflection to make it 1-0.
Neston started to increase the intensity with Pete Glasman picking the ball up and penetrating the 25 metre line, leaving Oliver Mills to push the ball into the goal making it 2-0.
Neston went into half time at 3-0 with another short corner conversion from Tom Smith.
The second-half saw Stockport Bramhall burn out, as the Neston side continued with a string of constant attacks, ending up with Jack Redhead taking it to 4-0.
A lapse in marking led to Stockport Bramhall getting a breakaway goal against the run of play making it 4-1.
Young Halfhead then went on a solo effort from the halfway line and dispatched a cracking ball into the net putting the score to 5-1.
Halfhead yet again finished off proceedings with a drag flick to claim his hat-trick. Final score 6-1.
A pleasing performance from Neston, but still plenty to work on and with plenty of chances missed in front of goal during the second half. Unsurprisingly, Steven Halfhead was Man of the Match.
In other news, the Men's 2s successfully entertained Bowdon 4s and put 14 past them winning 14-2.
Men's 3s got their first victory of the season winning 3-1 away at Brooklands.
