Andrews impressive again

OVER the years, Tixall's Mick Andrews has won the Sunday Bowls Flyers event more than any other player.

And he added to his impressive list of victories when he beat Upton Victory Hall's Tony Cavanagh this Sunday in a very close final.

Earlier, Andrews had fought back from 16-10 down to just get the better of your very disappointed correspondent Bill Atkinson, before he proved to be too consistent for last week's finalist Anthony O'Neill, another of the Tixall players, in their semi-final match.

To get through to the final, Upton's Tony Cavanagh, having his best outing for some time, had only just scraped past Port Sunlight Village and Work's Peter McBride in the quarter-final but then in the semi-final had a stunning 21-10 victory over Tixalls' Jamie Fitzpatrick, the runaway leader in the points table.

In the final, Cavanagh, continuing his good form, always had a slight edge over his opponent but it is no coincidence that Andrews has so many wins to his name and at 19-20 down he came up with two great woods to snatch yet another victory.

Results:

Quarter-finals:  A O'Neill 21, D Hazlehurst 13; M Andrews 21, W Atkinson 19; J Fitzpatrick 21, E Dutton 14; T Cavanagh 21, P McBride 10.

Semi-finals: Andrews 21, O'Neill 10; Cavanagh 21, Fitzpatrick 10.

Final: Andrews 21, Cavanagh 20.
