WITH disappointment from the heavy defeat at Skelmersdale United on Tuesday, Cammell Laird were looking to get their play-off hopes back on track with a win over West Yorkshire outfit Ossett Town at Kirklands.

But the Birkenhead side could not have got off to a worse start, with three  minutes on the clock Cammell’s conceded a needless free kick mid-way inside their own half, and were duly punished, writes Phillip Wilkinson.

The dead ball was delivered in to the penalty area, and some slack defending allowed Ossett Town striker Carl Stewart to play the ball in to the path of centre half Ryan Qualter, who beat goalkeeper Kevin Atherton.

However, this setback was short-lived and sparked the Birkenhead outfit into life - within seven  minutes they were level.

A simple route one clearance from Lee Atherton deceived the Ossett Town defence and allowed Laird’s midfielder Joe Evans to go through on goal and with the goalkeeper trapped near the edge of the penalty area, Evans delightfully lifted the ball over the stranded stopper.

If that response was pleasing for manager Tony Sullivan, the following 60 seconds would have seen a smile almost break on the Cammell's manager's face!

Again it was Joe Evans who again got himself on the score sheet with a right-footed shot in off the cross bar from 12 yards out to give Cammell Laird the advantage.

Laird then continued to dominate the game moving the ball around well and creating numerous chances and would add to the score line on 27 minutes with goal of the game.

Lairds top-scorer Jamie Henders netted his 24th goal of the season with an acrobatic finish from eight yards out for 3-1.

Lairds again struck just two minutes later, when Jamie Henders scored from the penalty spot for his 25th goal of the campaign.

Shortly before half-time, Ossett gave themselves hope of a comeback with the break looming James Eyles struck past Kevin Atherton with the aid of the inside of the post.

The second-half never lived up to the first and neither team could add to the six goals.

All three points were taken by the Birkenhead side, and moved up two places in the league to ninth, just eight points off the play-offs but with four games in hand.
