Team-mates battle it out in Sunday Flyers final
10:11am Wednesday 20th February 2013 in Sport By Bill Atkinson
AFTER an excellent morning's play at the Sunday Flyers in a sunny Birkenhead Park the final was between two players who have been competing in these tournaments since they first began, around 20 years ago.
Matthew Gilmore and Mick Andrews are now team mates at the Tixall Club but there was no quarter shown as they battled it out for supremacy.
After an enthralling game Gilmore, making his first appearance this year, just pipped Andrews and in doing so denied him adding to the already impressive total of wins he has built up over the years.
In their quarter final matches Gilmore was too good for Vic Alcock but Andrews had a real battle to come through against another player who was also making his first appearance of the year, Heswall RBL's Dave Mcdermott.
In the semi finals Andrews again had the harder match against yet another Tixall player, Ian Hazlehurst, while Gilmore beat the Lever Club's Dougie Briscoe, himself a recent past winner.
The final went to the wire but at 20-20 Gilmore came up with the winning wood to clinch the game and the top prize.
Results:
Quarter Finals: D. Briscoe 21, W. Atkinson 15; M. Gilmore 21, V. Alcock 10; I. Hazlehurst 21, N. Woodward 12; M. Andrews 21, D. McDermott 19. Semi Finals: Gilmore 21, Briscoe 13; Andrews 21, Hazlehurst 16. Final. Gilmore 21, Andrews 20.
