Wirral Sunday League round-up
1:33pm Monday 11th February 2013 in Sport By Ernie McDonald
INCESSANT downpours once again interrupted the local amateur football fraternity over the weekend no doubt providing additional headaches for the respective fixture secretaries.
But one side which managed to beat the weather, and had their supporters singing in the rain, was Division Two club Forum Athletic who rose to the occasion and secured a place in the Wirral & District FA's Sunday Junior Cup semi-finals.
The Rock Ferry-based youngsters emerged victorious following a competitive and entertaining tussle with Wallasey Sunday League counterparts AM Plant Hire.
Brian Baber, Lee Martin and Tom Farrell were Forum's hot shots in Sunday's 3-1 triumph and they'll now face The Rakers in the last four.
The possibility of an all-Wirral league final is still on the cards as Higher Bebington RBL are in the other half of the draw, but they must overcome Ship Wallasey to secure their passage to the final.
In the Wirral & District FA's Sunday Amateur Cup semi-final, Division One promotion chasers Windmill were denied by the weather in their clash with the Clarence, as were the other two semi-finalists Irby and Shaftesbury YC "B".
On the domestic scene, Division Two leaders Lever Bushell Athletic kicked for home in the race for the title after they romped to a 7-0 victory against Gladstone Athletic.
As a result, the newcomers drew 11 points clear and confirmed the victory with hat-tricks from Danny Wood and Kieran Latham.
A Joe Lloyd effort completed the statistics as Lever threw down the gauntlet to their promotion rivals, who may now find the fixture backlog to their disadvantage.
At the other end of the table, it was a good day at last for Star Ozzys who eased their way clear of bottom spot following a creditable 1-1 draw with Port Sunlight.
The Wirral Sunday League has a limited number of vacancies for next season.
Application forms can be obtained from the League Secretary, Dave Lea, telephone 0151 608 4332.
