Winter Flyers success for Fitzpatrick

THE continuous heavy rain in Birkenhead Park on Sunday proved to be no problem for Tixall's Jamie Fitzpatrick and, by winning his second tournament since the New Year, has given himself a huge lead in the points table.

In the final he beat your correspondent West Kirby Victoria's Bill Atkinson, enjoying a welcome return of form after a long spell of early round defeats.

In the quarter-final, Fitzpatrick had a fairly comfortable win over Port Sunlight Village and Work's Peter McBride and he then had an excellent 21-16 win over Paul Roberts from North Wales, where he plays for the Bailleys Hill Club.

Atkinson first got the better of Kendall's Colin Portis in the quarter-final before being too consistent for Roger Griffiths, another player who now lives and plays in North Wales.

The final was always close and at 18 across it could have gone either way but Fitzpatrick's nagging accuracy was just too much and he was able to clinch yet another victory.

Results:

Quarter-finals: W Atkinson 21, C Portis 17; R Griffiths 21, C Strowbridge 15; P Roberts 21, N Feely 16; J Fitzpatrick 21, P McBride 15.

Semi-finals: Atkinson 21, Griffiths 14; Fitzpatrick 21, Roberts 16.

Final: Fitzpatrick 21, Atkinson 18.

The Birkenhead and District Parks annual meeting will be held at the Gladstone Club next Monday February 18, at 7.30pm.
