Hignett scores first win of series
2:43pm Tuesday 5th February 2013 in Sport By Bill Atkinson
THE improvement in the weather meant that there was a large turnout for the bowls on Sunday morning but yet again Tixall's Jamie Fitzpatrick made it through to the final.
However this time his bid to win for a second successive week was thwarted by John Hignett Jnr over from Liverpool where he plays for the Walnut Tree Club.
Hignett had a potentially very difficult match in the quarter finals against Tixall's Mick Andrews but he came through this with a 21-12 win before beating Hoylake Central's Tommy Walker in the semis.
Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick had got the better of Our Lady's Ritchie Marshall in the quarters before beating Diane Alcock in the semi-final.
The final was a tough match for both players but Hignett won through to take his first win of the current series.
Results:
Quarter-finals: J Fitzpatrick 21, R Marshall 12; D Alcock 21, J Eissen 16; T Walker 21, N Feely 19; J Hignett Jnr 21, M Walker 12.
Semi-finals: Fitzpatrick 21, Alcock 15; Hignett 21, Walker 15.
Final: Hignett 21, Fitzpatrick 16.
Despite losing Fitzpatrick has gone further ahead in the points table and his consistent play since the New Year means he has a big lead over second place Nigel Hughes
