WEST Kirby, who have conceded the least amount of points in the Carlsberg West Cheshire League Division One, are on course for their first title success since 1965, after a solitary strike from the hard-working Lee Gibson secured maximum spoils against current leaders Heswall.

Reigning champions Poulton Victoria were too good on the day for Chester challengers Christleton and celebrated a fine 4-0 win at Little Heath, thanks to goals from Danny Edwards, Nicky Dillon and evergreen performer Kevin Thompson.

Form side Ashville turned in an impressive performance at Merseyside Police and had hat-trick star Simon Donoghue in fine fettle. Further goals by Ian Quirk, Mark Baggott and Dave Cavanagh completed the statistics. Chris Killen replied for the Bobbies.

Goals from John Strange and Liam Kennedy were enough for Cammell Laird Reserves to eclipse Castrol Social 2-0, while Robbie Courtnay's strike helped New Brighton to a 1-1 stalemate with Blacon YC. Craig Warrington obliged for the visitors.

Newton finished 1-1 with Maghull, courtesy of an own goal. Davie Johnson was Maghull's marksman.

Elsewhere, Ollie Robinson, Simon Andrews and Mike Moran found the net in newly-promoted Upton AA's 3-0 decision over Ellesmere Port.

Back-to-back wins against Marine Reserves and Vauxhall Motors Reserves have seen last season's runners-up, Aintree Villa, continue their surge up the table. Efforts from Phil Cole and Colin McDonald clinched Saturday's 2-1 win against Vauxhall. Victory over the Motormen in this weekend's return clash at Rivacre Road could elevate the Racecourse outfit to top spot for the first time this season.

Division Two leaders West Kirby Reserves trailed 1-0 to a goal from Ashville Reserves' Adam Johnson and they were grateful for a share of the spoils, Kevin Upton equalising with three minutes remaining.

Chris Bollard struck twice and was joined on the score sheet by Ian Brunt as Heswall Reserves beat title favourites Capenhurst Villa 3-0.

Bottom club FC Pensby celebrated their second win of the season after Andy Edge and Mark Irvine netted in a crucial 2-1 win at Willaston, while Carl Riley and Gordon Harrison were responsible for the goals as New Brighton Reserves overcame neighbours Poulton Victoria Reserves 2-1.

Matty Gill and Graeme Carvell were on the mark for Division Three leaders Bebington Athletic, who increased their lead at the top to six points following Saturday's 2-0 victory at promotion rivals Ellesmere Port Reserves.

Second-placed Capenhurst Villa Reserves accounted for nearest rivals Mersey Royal 4-0, courtesy of efforts from Matty Edwards, Mike Urmston, Lee Hammond and Robbie Manning.

But a goal from Reece Nevitt failed to prevent Upton AA Reserves from capitulating 2-1 at Shaftesbury. Scott Houghton and Danny Graham netted for the winners.

Lakewood maintained pole position in the Youth Division on goal difference from Hale, after Archie Groagan, 2, Jerome Smith, Andy Price and Robbie Foley scored in a 5-4 win at West Kirby. Gerrard Long, 3, and Liam Doyle plundered the goals as Richmond Raith Rovers cruised home 4-0 against Ashville.
