Houlihan's Football League: Victory for Armchair Alliance in Memorial Challenge Cup

IN the Tony Houlihan’s Memorial Challenge Cup, Third Division Armchair Alliance produced the result of the day by knocking out Premier Division Argyll.

Goals from Ian Wakefield, Liam Farrall, Robert Marrs and Steve Abbott sealed a 4-2 victory after extra-time.

Kevin Wood hit a hat-trick as Stirrup Sports & Social went through 6-0 at Farmers Arms Moreton; Chris Griffiths, Michael Devey and Carl Maughan netting the other goals.

Prenton Dell hit ten without reply against Victoria Lodge, D  Edwards (3), Andy Bolton (3), Chris Hannon (2), John McKay and Paul Ryan all on target.

In a much closer affair, goals from Dava Byrne and Gary Rafferty were enough to put Upton Villa in to the last eight with a 2-1 victory over Dock FC (Tom Wingfield).

Also through to the quarter finals are Rock Ferry Social who had a 3-1 success at Heygarth (Steve Forbes), with Kris Hesketh, Craig Cairns and John Strange scoring.

Shaftesbury Youth A beat Saddle Club 5-4 after extra-time in the David Tacy Cup and Shore Villa bowed out of the Cheshire Sunday Cup in a 2-0 loss at Queens Bredbury.

Kieran Delaney scored four times for Lairds Sports Club in the only Premier Division game of the day; however, sadly for him two goals each for Liam Casey and Mark McNoon with one from Chris Hill, gave Bidston Hotel a 5-4 victory.

In Division One, Lancelyn Glenavon (Steve Corris 3, Dave Beattie, Andy Jones) and Birkenhead Youth ‘B’ (Aaron Dillon, Matty Roberts, Tom Povall, Anthony Povall, Karlin Fleckner) shared ten goals in a 5-5 draw.

Lions FC strengthened their position at the top of the table with goals from Craig Hortin and Ricky Harrison in a 2-1 win at King’s Arms (Sean Phillips).

Division Two leaders Shaftesbury Youth ‘B’ won 4-1 at Ashville Old Boys (Kalumbo Mwandwe) and AFC Houlihans leapfrogged Merebrook in to 2nd place as Liam Cairns, Connor Murphy and Kyle Kelly scored in a 3-1 success.

A Lee Bedding double kept FC Ridger in the battle at the top as they beat FC Ellies 2-0 and it was honours even as Riley’s FC (Edwards, Noonan, Naughalty, Robbo) drew 4-4 with PSV Athletic (Matt Redmond 2, Jack Evans, Danny Blades).

At the top of Division Three, Allport Athletic (James Oswick) were held 1-1 at FC Ridger Athletic and Old Parkonians moved in to runners-up spot with a convincing 6-0 victory against Wirral Spartans; Ben Kierman (2), Matty Langford, Tom Briggs, Scott Hoather and Paul Jones doing the damage. 

New Ferry Rangers made a good start to the New Year, with goals from Sam Horner and Sean Hyland as they beat FC Vaults (Chris Jackson) 2-1 and Beechwood Falcons hit six against Shawcross; Luke Wynne (2), Connor McDonald (2), Jordan Becall and Kelvin Phoenix scoring for Beechwood with Chris Wigfield getting a consolation effort for Shawcross. 

The only Youth Division result of the day saw Glenavon Youth beat Shore Villa 10-2; Tom Fenley hit four, with doubles from Jake Smith and Jake Whittaker and a single from Sean Malone and an own goal.
