Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday League: Shore Villa go through

HOULIHAN'S Birkenhead Sunday League sides were involved in re-arranged Cheshire Sunday Cup second-round ties and Shore Villa went through to round three thanks to a Tom Kellock double, a Carl Clampit penalty and a Darren Caplin effort, in a 4-1 win at Stirrup Sports & Social (Billy Devey).

King’s Arms went out despite goals from Matthew Easterbrook, Paul Oates and Leigh Thompson, as they lost 5-3 to Queens Macclesfield.

Lancelyn Glenavon’s interest in the competition also ended with a 2-0 home defeat to Queens Bredbury.

Shore Villa Youth went out of the Wirral Under-18s Cup on penalties after finishing 4-4 with Princes Villa; however, Cammell Laird Youth had better fortune in round three of the Cheshire Under-17s Cup, as they ran out 3-2 winners at Juno United.

Beechwood Youth needed a big effort in extra-time to see off JFC Pavilions 4-2; goals coming from Sam Gardiner, Sam Crellin, Alfie Banford and Dominic Swift.

In the Tony Houlihan’s Memorial Challenge Cup second-rRound, Liam Cairns hit a hat-trick for AFC Houlihans as they won 3-0 at Allport Athletic and Farmers Arms Moreton joined them in the next round, as goals from Danny Burke, Steve Painter, Aidan Ryan and Wayne Palethorpe, gave them a 4-3 result over Old Parkonians.

Premier Division action saw Queens Park (David Bowe, Chris Bowe, Chris Riley) defeat Argyll FC (Lloyd Ithell, Stuart Smith) 3-2. 

Tom Taft, Stephen James, Jamie Holmes and Ste Owen were on target for Upton Villa as they recorded a 4-2 win at Bidston Hotel (Jamie Brown, Tommy Baker) and doubles from Jon Atkinson and Steve Jones helped Rock Ferry Social to a 4-1 success against Lairds Sports Club (Ally Major).

In Division One, Mark Layfield scored twice for Shaftesbury ‘A’ as they beat Birkenhead Youth B (Aaron Dillon) 2-1 and Churchwood (Lee Jones) and Lions FC (Alan Mortin) shared the points in a 1-1 draw. 

Karl Boyd, Colin Parry, Andy Lee and Jim O’Toole scored for Merebrook in Division Two, as they narrowly defeated PSV Athletic 4-3; Aaron Dean, Barry Huxley and Danny Blades for PSV.

Ashville Old Boys (Tom Murray, Ross Miller, Ryan Pleavin) beat Riley’s FC (Nutty, Noonan) 3-2 and Shaftesbury B came from three down to win 6-3 against FC Ridger (Ian McCann 2, Andy Freeman).

There were plenty of goals in Division Three; Ian Wakefield, Robert Marrs, Liam Farrell hit doubles and Steve Abbott a single as Armchair Alliance won 7-3 at Woodward (Aaron Cooper, Thomas Dunn, James Dilworth).  Paul Wallace (3), Si Parsonage, Jay Hilton and Dave Jones all scored for FC Ridger Athletic, in a 6-2 victory over New Ferry Rangers (Tidswell). 

Dave Connor bagged a hat-trick for FC Vaults, adding to Chris Jackson and Dan Bass efforts in a 5-3 result against Beechwood Falcons and Eswa defeated Wirral Spartans 5-2; their goals coming from Liam Rose (2), Jack Rooke, Michael Boswell and Mike Bowe.
