Award for artistic Wirral pupils

Wirral Globe: Pupls with their work Pupls with their work

WIRRAL pupils scooped a national award for their artistic efforts to support charity Genetic Disorders UK.

Children at Greenleas Primary School, Wallasey, took part in the contest and designed denim-themed works of art in aid of the charity’s annual Jeans for Genes Day.

The competition, which was run by office and consumer prduct experts Avery, saw youngsters up and down the country sign up to create denim murals, sculptures, and art installations.

But it was pupils from the Greenleas after-school club who won the judges over with their entry featuring a giant denim owl and the message: "Children for the Future."

Club organiser Jan Taylor said: "The artwork was created by pupils from across all year groups in our after-school club, ‘The Owl’s Den.’ "The owl is also the Greenleas School mascot, so creating a wise owl out of old fabrics seemed like a great idea for our entry.

"All the children in our club worked very hard on the owl, so we were absolutely thrilled with the news that we'd won."

As the overall winners of the competition, The Owl’s Den were awarded an arts and crafts prize pack worth £500, and Hobbycraft vouchers.

Mark Williams, Avery’s UK general manager, said: "Jeans for Genes Day is an incredible fundraising appeal that we’re very proud to support, they really do make a difference to the lives of thousands of children born with genetic disorders each year.

"In addition to the fundraising we currently carry out for Jeans for Genes Day, we launched the competition to help increase awareness of the important work done to help transform the lives of children with genetic disorders.

"We were delighted with the entries we received which all showed real ingenuity and originality, but the creativity, as well as the time and effort spent on the entry from The Owl’s Den particularly impressed us."
