MERSEY Tunnel Users Association will be protesting against increases in tunnel tolls when they come into force this Sunday, April 6.

Motorists are invited to join them for the demonstration on the Oakdale Road bridge off the A5139/Dock Road Seacombe, near to the Kingsway tunnel entrance in Wallasey on Sunday between 10am and noon.

"Drivers are already paying through the nose when they use the roads because of fuel and other taxes."

John McGoldrick

Posters and placards will be visible, but organisers have no plans to go on to the tunnel approaches or attempt to disrupt any traffic going though the tunnel or over the bridge.

The increases were approved by six Liverpool-based members of Merseytravel's board in February and from Sunday car drivers will be charged £1.40 per journey through either the Kingsway or Queensway tunnels.

But owners of class-two vehicles, which include minibuses and small goods vehicles, will be hit hardest as their toll is going up from £1.30 to £2.80 per journey.

Buses and vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes will be charged £4.20 and HGVs will incur a 40p rise to £5.60.

John McGoldrick from Mersey Tunnel Users Association, told the Globe: "Drivers are already paying through the nose when they use the roads because of fuel and other taxes. There is no justification for the increase, as the Tunnels already make a large profit which goes to Merseytravel.

"If people fail to protest in one way or another, then it is likely that there will be another tolls increase in 12 months' time. The Tunnels Users hope that people will come along on Sunday morning to show the politicians that they don't want tolls, let alone increases"

TBH I dont use the tunnel. I work and live on the Wirral so closing it wouldnt bother me. This is a farcical situation yet, right now I dont care because I dont use it. Many small business's will suffer because of this but the coucillors dont care.

They say the tolls are going up to ease congestion what a lie if people are to not use cars and go on the bus how come the class 2 toll for buses has gone up by £1.50 liars

Quite so Jay, a quick calculation of the 430 service alone indicates that the operators expenditure on increased tunnel tolls will be £53,000.
Who do Scales and Dowd think are going to end up paying that.
Will a £53,000 expenditure increase on one service alone encourage the public to use public transport? Dont need to be Vernher von Braun to work that one out.

The idea that the hike is designed to "cut congestion" is laughable. It's about raising more money for Merseytravel, so they can spend it on nice new offices. Mark Dowd (I cannot stand the man) shows typical arrogance in saying that it is only 10 pence- well that adds up over the year.

I would ask Merseytravel this question- if this toll hike is meant to cut congestion and encourage people out of their cars, why are the tolls for buses almost doubling?

We all know why the Tunnel Tolls have gone up the monstrocity that is U-534 yes that rusted submarine that mersey travel have brought to put near woodside to attract tourism.. Why dont they reactivate the torpedos and use it to blow it up and that will save alot of money..

If as Mark Dowd says the rise is only 10p then why has smarmy Dowd not cut the toll by 10p then after all its only 10p

i have been paying for this tunnel personally for thirty years now,how long do we keep paying ?
congestion when i go through at rush hour continues to get worse and today was slower than ever the rise did not make any difference and will not all the people using this tunnel have to we would not throw our money away if we did not have to so lets see some concession for those with no choice if you live on one side and work on the other there needs to be a concideration or should we all just stay at home and join the benefit lines. come on Dowd give us poor working stiffs a break.
