A HOMELESS former nurse smashed a window to get into unoccupied premises to keep warm, Wirral Magistrates were told.

Nitsa Margaret Michael, 48, of no fixed address, admitted breaking a window at a development site at Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, and also dishonest use of electricity.

Prosecutor Jenny Williams said Ms Michael was found in the kitchen at a flat.

A window had been broken with a gas cylinder and the hob had been turned on.

"I only caused damage because I had nowhere to live", commented Ms Michael.

Nama Zaroug, defending, said it was a very sad matter. Ms Michael had served the community as a nurse for twenty seven years.

She found herself frozen, hungry and homeless. She apologised for her behaviour.

If she was given custody it might lead to her being introduced to the agencies which could help her.

The magistrates were told only recently Ms Michael had been sentenced for a burglary matter at the same development site.

They jailed the defendant for 60 days.
