PROBLEMS keeping up with mortgage repayments led to the manager of a carpet store stealing from his employer, Wirral Magistrates heard.
John Griffiths, 37, of Falkland Road in Wallasey admitted stealing a total of £1,821 from the Carpet Company at their Laird Street, Birkenhead store.
Prosecutor Clare Ion told how an investigation was mounted after discrepencies appeared on sale documents. Griffiths was interviewed and said he had stolen cash on about fifty occasions to a total of around £2,000.
In court he apologised. He said he had mortgage problems and saw stealing as the only way of keeping his house. He had let himself down.
He had not previously been in trouble. Magistrates ordered him to serve 180 hours community work and he had to pay £500 towards compensation.
