Diabetes  Week is a national campaign led by Diabetes UK to raise awareness, raise funds and pioneer research to help people with diabetes.  According to figures published by Diabetes UK, there are over 16,000 people aged over 17 who are registered diabetic with a GP in Wirral.
Having the right healthcare is essential for the wellbeing of all people with diabetes and Diabetes UK promote 15 healthcare essentials to help people ensure they get the right level of care they need, including: getting your blood pressure checked, having your weight checked, help to quit smoking, and having your feet checked.

Diabetes can lead to complications with your feet by damaging nerves, the immune system and restricting the blood supply to the feet.  So if you have diabetes, make sure you get your feet examined annually by a specialist podiatrist.

Podiatrists have a vital role to play in preventing and managing foot complications amongst people with diabetes.  They are on hand at every stage, be it prevention, concern about a foot problem, and dealing with genuine problems once they occur.

Things you can do to help your feet:

  • check them daily for broken skin and inflammation – ask a family or carer to help
  • wash them daily and apply a moisturiser (except between the toes)
  • cut and file the toe nail straight across
  • ensure your shoes fit well
  • take regular exercise and keep to a healthy eating plan
  • …and if you’re going on holiday or enjoying the sunshine, never go barefooted and always apply sunscreen to your feet.
