WORKERS used digging equipment to free a group of swans trapped on a frozen boating lake on New Brighton promenade.

The RSPCA received several calls about the distressed birds on Thursday morning.

When RSPCA Inspector John Littlewood arrived at the scene, he spotted diggers working on the nearby marine lake re-development and asked if they could help break the thick ice up.

Sadly, one of the 15 swans had died before the rescue team arrived, but all the others were freed.

RSPCA spokesman Leanne Plumtree said: "We have received around 100 calls since Wednesday reporting ducks and swans stuck in ice on ponds and lakes.

"Most of the birds managed to set themselves free and we have rescued others.

"Due to the adverse weather conditions, the Society can only respond to emergency calls, but staff on the ground are trying their hardest to do what they can.
