A WIRRAL student's dream of becoming a professional footballer has become reality after he signed a two-year deal with Wigan Athletic.

Will Evans, currently studying for his GCSEs at Kingsway Academy in Moreton, will join the club as a full-time footballer from 2017-2019.

The Centre Midfielder's signing comes after success at Wolverhampton Warriors and after being scouted for the Wigan FC Academy programme relatively late in the under 15s.

Will said: "I'm so happy to have been offered to sign for Wigan Athletic FC.

"Playing for a professional club is something I've always dreamed of so hopefully now I can just work hard and make sure I keep a future within the game".

Will will need to achieve the best GCSE possible and will continue to study for up to 15 hours per week over his two-year apprenticeship at Wigan.

Gregor Rioch, Wigan Athletic academy manager says: “We are proud and delighted to have offered Will full-time employment at Wigan Athletic Football Club. Week after week, Will has matured into an excellent football player and an excellent young man.

"If he continues to show the same hard work and commitment in the coming years he has the potential to achieve great things."

Mike Hurn, head of education and Welfare at Wigan FC, said: "I have been impressed with the way Will has developed and improved as a person as well as a player.

"He must continue to apply himself fully as the hard work really does begin now.”

Shelagh Potter, Kingsway Principal said: "I am extremely proud of Will and what he has already accomplished in such a competitive sport - his achievements are recognition to his commitment, hard work and ability.

"I am sure Will can rise to the challenges both in football and in school over the next few years".
