A WIRRAL PE teacher has been nominated to receive a national award by a major training provider.

Lisa Snelson, a teacher at St Mary’s Catholic College, will attend an awards ceremony in Coventry tomorrow, Wednesday.

The Create Development National Awards recognises and celebrates teachers, schools and institutions that do exceptional work and make a real impact on the lives of children.

Create Development, which specialises in PE, gymnastics and dance training, is hosting the national awards ceremony at prestigious Coombe Abbey hotel and conference centre.

A spokesman said: "Choosing winners from the thousands of amazing teachers, coaches, schools and organisations that we work with is going to be one of our most difficult challenges. We’re looking forward to congratulating all the winners and those nominated."

Mrs Snelson has coached and trained St Mary's trampoline team to national success over the last three years, including the final of the British Gymnastics Schools Association trampoline competition in March.

Students at the 11-19 comprehensive school in Wallasey Village scooped a total of three trophies, with one girl, Megan Clayton, becoming British champion in the Under-14 Disability Category 1 Novice competition.

Megan then joined team members Mary Evans-Ward and Mia Glover to become British team champions.

St Mary’s Under-19 boys came second nationally in their category at the same BGSA competition held in Birmingham. The whole squad of 11 had sailed through regional and zonal heats in Newcastle and Belfast.

Mrs Snelson has also organised and trained St Mary's Sports Leaders for many years as part of the national Sports Leaders programme.

Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are selected to take part in the programme to gain employer-recognised qualifications. As part of their course they are trained to organise and run regular sports programmes in local primary schools.

Mrs Snelson, who has taught in St Mary’s for more than 20 years, said: "I am delighted to be nominated for such a great award, and that in itself is wonderful.

"None of this would have been possible without being able to work with such fantastic students over the years at St Mary’s. They have shown great dedication and commitment, and I am really proud and honoured to be their teacher."
