THREE Wirral students have been crowned national trampoline champions, with one of them becoming an individual British champion.

Eleven students from St Mary’s Catholic College, Wallasey, competed in the finals of the British Gymnastics Schools Association trampoline competition in Birmingham on Saturday.

As a result, Wallasey-born Megan Clayton, aged 12, is now individual British champion in the Under-14 Disability Category 1 Novice competition.

The talented youngster also competed in a team event alongside Mia Glover and Mary Evans-Ward, both also 12 and from Wallasey, to carry off the top trophy in the Under-14 Disability Category 1 Novice team competition.

In a further triumph for the mixed comprehensive school, Under-19 Intermediate Boys' team members  Sam Turnbull, Alfred Mupakasa, Russell Nokes and Kane Stapleton, achieved second place in the national final of their event.

They had already been named North Zonal champions at the BGSA competition in Belfast in January, beating teams from all over the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

St Mary's Under-19 Novice team, competing at national level for the first time, also managed a very respectable fifth place - fifth in the country that is!

Squad coach and St Mary's PE teacher Lisa Snelson said: "What an amazing achievement for all our talented trampolinists. They have worked extremely hard, showing great determination, and their tremendous success at national level is proof of that. I am so proud of them."
