SIXTH formers from five Wirral schools grilled local politicians on topics such as transportation and immigration during a Politics Day quiz.

Students from West Kirby Grammar, Wirral Grammar School for Girls, Wirral Grammar School for Boys, St Anselm's and Calday Grange took part in debates and a Question Time-style question and answer session.

The event was organised by West Kirby Grammar.

Panel members included the deputy leader of Wirral's Conservatives, Lesley Rennie; Pat Cleary, Green Party councillor for Birkenhead and Tranmere; Peter Reisdorf, the Liberal Democrats candidate for West Wirral; Phil Griffiths, President of UKIP North West and Matthew Daniel, Labour councillor for Liscard.

Melissa Conboy, who teaches poitical studies at West Kirby Grammar said: "Young people are the future and they need to understand that politics will have an effect on every aspect of their lives.

"They need to understand the political process and get involved".

West Kirby Upper Sixth student Anna Turner, who took on the role of Question Time presenter David Dimbleby for the session, said: "Having the politicians in front of them enabled the students to ask questions on many of the key issues which affect young people.

"It helps young people to form their own views and opinions and encourages them to use the democratic rights they have".

The Politics Day was the finale of a series of events organised by the school to encourage students to take a more active role in their communities and become more politically aware for the future.
