YOUNG performers had the chance to show off their talents by auditioning for hit ITV show Britain's Got Talent at a Wirral school.

Auditions were held at Birkenhead School today. The school held its own version – Birkenhead’s Got Talent earlier this year – posting the performances on its Facebook page.

Their posts were picked up by the producers of Britain’s Got Talent who, impressed by what they saw, asked if they could film auditions at the school.

Fifty people took part in the pre-audition process and 25 were put through to today's auditions.

They are waiting to hear whether they are through to the next round.

Among them was pianist and Birkenhead Prep School pupil Jessica Rooney, who performed Gary Barlow and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sing.

The eight-year-old, from Moreton, told the Globe: "I never thought I’d get the chance to audition but feel happy that I did. Because I got through the first round it’s really good.”

Assistant headteacher Kirsten Pankhurst, whose daughter Darcy auditioned, told the Globe: "We were very excited to host Britain's Got Talent.

"I'm a big fan of singing and drama so I thought it was great that our children have been able to have the opportunity to show off their talents.

"It develops their confidence, which was the main thing for us, so to get them up singing and dancing was marvellous.

"We had a really good response and are very proud of our little ones.

"They are in class a lot of the time, so to be able to get on stage is a something different and good for them."

On her daughter's performance, Mrs Pankhurst said "Darcy is a real drama queen, so I thought instead of being a drama queen at home, get her on the stage and let her get it out of her system.

"It's the first time she’s ever sung on stage and she was absolutely terrified, but I'm really proud of her, she did a really good job. I thought she was great."
