STAFF and students from West Kirby Grammar School walked more than 1,000 miles to raise cash for charity.

Around 850 pupils plus teachers and school support staff took part in the annual Whole School Walk fundraiser on Friday.

Despite rainy conditions walkers, were in good spirits around the 12-mile course along the Wirral Way.

The event has raised around £6,000 for charities including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the school’s on going support for underprivileged children overseas.

Head Teacher Alison Duffy said: "West Kirby students have been raising huge sums of money for good causes since the school first opened its doors more than 100 years ago.

"This year’s school charity is Alder Hey Children's Hospital and the great work they do there gave everyone the inspiration to complete the course.

"Some of the funds raised will also go to our on-going appeal to support children in poor areas of China.

"We've already funded the building of a village school in a particularly remote area of China which is making a huge difference to that community."
