MOTORISTS face ten weeks of disruption as engineers from National Grid engineers carry out emerergency repairs on a high voltage electricity cable in Prenton.

A spokesman for the firm says the cable was damaged by a contractor working for another utility company and repairs are underway in Prenton Road East and Prenton Road West.

Prenton Road East is currently closed to traffic because of a gas escape in the area but the road is expected to reopen in two weeks' time

Temporary traffic lights will then be in operation at the junction of Prenton Road East, Prenton Road West and Borough Road and while work continues seven days a week to repair the high voltage cable.

The damage to the cable is not affecting electricity supplies to homes and businesses.

in a statement National Grid said: "We have been in contact with Wirral Council’s highways department and with officials from Tranmere Rovers Football Club to plan the works.

"Every effort will be made to keep traffic moving but some delays are expected at peak hours and on match days.

"There will be no road or footpath closures and residential parking will not be affected."

If it's going to take 10 weeks to repair, it must be the 132kv Extra High Voltage cable that runs from Prenton Grid, down Borough Road and on through the Birkenhead tunnel.

I hope the contractor who hit it wasn't a COLAS special subby and were insured to cover a bill that will surely go into £millions.
