A WIRRAL teenager has been named St John's Ambulance district cadet of the year for Merseyside.

Kes Earl ,15, from Bromborough Cadets picked up the title at the Regional Cadet of the Year competition.

Matthew Dean, 15 from Huyton and Eleanor Wellman, 15 from Birkenhead were chosen as Deputy District Cadets for Merseyside.

The two-day competition, held at the Anderton Centre near Bolton, saw 28 of the very best of the Cadets take part in some very tough tasks.

Entrants took part in a wide range of subjects such as communication, team work, presentation, the media and social skills.

After learning of her success, Kes said: "I'm really thrilled to be picked as District Cadet for Merseyside, the competition was amazing and all the Cadets worked so hard.

"I'm really looking forward to representing St John Ambulance over the coming year.

"I've learned so much since joining St John Ambulance and I’d recommend it to anyone. First aid really can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved."

Graham Ellis, regional youth manager for St John Ambulance in the North West said: "Our Cadets have shown again this weekend what an outstanding credit they are to the organisation, their families and the local community.

"It is a great achievement to be nominated to take part in this competition, let alone win it.

"Kes, Eleanor and Matthew have demonstrated tremendous dedication and enthusiasm over the course of the competition and I know that they will be great ambassadors for St John Ambulance."
