IT was sunshine all the way for more than 3,500 runners after they set off from Birkenhead Park to take part in the Liverpool Marathon over the week-end.

The majority finished the complete 26.2m run after heading for Liverpool through the Birkenhead Tunnel.

But the race incorporated the Wirral 10K and 1,000 people happily waved their fellow-runners on their way after terminating their run at King’s Parade, New Brighton.

Competitors, many in fancy dress, were cheered from the sidelines. Several roads across  Birkenhead and Wallasey had been closed to traffic for safety reasons until the last of the runners had passed through.

Race director Alan Rothwell said: “From the off everything went to plan.

"The weather was fantastic and while the number of runners – 3,578 - was down on last year, there was a high percentage of locals in 2011 doing it as a one-off because it was new.

"We've seen more runners from across the country this year and our five-year plan is to reach 20,000.”
