Wallasey superstore drops round-the-clock opening bid

RETAIL giant Asda has scrapped plans to open a Wallasey superstore round-the-clock.

The national chain asked Wirral Council for permission to adjust trading permissions to 24 hours a day, from Monday to Saturday, at its Seaview Road store.

The application caused an outcry among local residents who claimed the changes would mean increased noise and disturbance.

However, the council’s planning department confirmed today Asda has now withdrawn its application.

Resident Sandra Scott, whose home backs onto Asda’s car park, said she was “delighted.”

She said: “I am absolutely thrilled that they have withdrawn the plans – it is great news. 

"We already have problems with noises from deliveries and car alarms going off so extended opening hours would have made it worse.

“I hope they don’t try to submit similar plans in the future but if they do we will fighting those as well.”

Ward councillor Leah Fraser was also concerned about the application, saying she believed round-the-clock trading was not suitable for a residential area.

She told the Globe: “If you look at other supermarkets that have 24-hour opening times, such as Tesco in Bidston, there are no houses in the immediate vicinity.

“I am really pleased for the local people who did not want this to go ahead. It would not have been fair on them.”
