Fire crews used specialist equipment to free a woman trapped in her vehicle following a two-car crash in Meols this afternoon.

Crews from West Kirby and Upton fire stations plus the Search and Rescue Team based at Croxteth attended the accident in Birkenhead Road, which occured at around 2pm.

A  40-year-old woman was released from one car by fire officers using hydraulic rescue equipment to remove the roof of the vehicle.

She was taken by ambulance to Arrowe Park Hospital suffering spinal injuries.

A 28-year-old man suffering from shock was treated at the scene by paramedics but refused hospital treatment.

The road to Moreton from the railway bridge at Meols was closed for more than an hour while the rescue operation was carried out.
