Wirral Council’s kennels will be open to the public this weekend for a chance to have a look around - and maybe even set the ball rolling on adopting a brand new "family member."

The council, with the help of the Friends of Birkenhead Council Kennels, have arranged for two open days to take place on Saturday, September 29, and Sunday, September 30, between 1pm and 4pm.

Visitors can have a look at the facilities, talk to staff and most importantly view the kennels’ current canine guests.

Councillor Brian Kenny, Wirral Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “This is the first time the kennels will have been open for public viewing at a weekend and it will give those who work during the week the opportunity to visit us, view the dogs and maybe fall in love with one of them.

“Please come along and meet the dogs - your new family member may be waiting for you. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and help start the re-homing procedure in motion there and then, if that’s what people want to do.”

At present, the kennels are only open on weekdays, between 11am and 1pm, and 2pm to 4.30pm.

If the weekend events prove popular and successful, the opening hours may be reviewed
