WORK has started on a multi-million pound project to improve a high-voltage power supply line running across Wirral.

The overhead line, from Birkenhead to Capenhurst, is part of a massive network carrying electricity across the country.

National Grid says the refurbishment will cost nearly £6m and will keep the line in good working order to ensure the borough has the power it needs.

Engineers will replace fittings connecting wires to 47 pylons. There will be no interruption to supplies during the project, which will be completed by early December.

No roads or footpaths will be closed while the work is being carried out although in agreement with Cheshire West and Chester Council, part of the Wirral Way will be reduced in width for a short period allowing access to pylons.

The company has written to homes and businesses directly affected by its work. A special telephone number has been set up to answer questions about the work: 0800 021 7878.
