Wirral youngsters urged to share their views on council spending

WIRRAL youngsters are being urged to make their voices heard about how they think council cash should be spent.

The local authority’s ‘What Really Matters’ event, which launched earlier this month, is a chance for residents to tell council bosses what services they find important.

But despite more than 2,500 people registering their views so far, the council wants more young people to get involved.

Councillor Phil Davies, leader of Wirral Council, said: “I have been really pleased with the response rate so far but would like to encourage more young people to tell us what their priorities are.

"Everyone, whatever their age, has their own opinion about how we should target money to make Wirral a better place to live.

“We have written to every school in the borough to ask them to engage their pupils in this process and we will be taking our consultation roadshow to local youth clubs to gather as many views as possible."

"This year’s Youth Voice Conference, which will bring over 100 young people together at Wallasey Town Hall, will also be focused on the ‘What Really Matters’ consultation.

“We are really pleased to be having this input and look forward to hearing how they think that £100m worth of savings should be found.”

The ‘What Really Matters’ roadshow will be at the following locations over the next week:

Monday, September 24: Hoylake Children’s Centre, 9:30am -11am, Cherry Trees Centre, Liscard, 9am – 5:30pm and Birkenhead Market 9am – 5pm.

Tuesday, September 25: Total Fitness, Prenton, 9am -1pm and Greasby Children’s Centre, 9:30am -11am.

Wednesday, September 26: MECCA Bingo, Birkenhead, 11am – 1.30pm, West Kirby Children’s Centre, 1:30pm – 3pm and The Lauries Centre, Birkenhead, 6pm - 8pm

Thursday, September 27: Tesco Bidston, 10am – 7:30pm and ALDI Birkenhead, 10am – 7:30pm.

Friday, September 28: Pensby Children’s Centre, 9:30am – 11am and ASDA Liscard, 10am – 6.00pm.

Tick that box!!!

I know, we will pay a shed load of senior officers more money than most of us can dream of and ask a load of kids to give us the answers to our problems! Why don't we employ them?

I used to be proud to be a public servant but it's just so depressing.

Having visited on the website to fill the questionnaire in. I was amazed at how amateur the forms/questions are. Some of the questions ask you to vote 1,2, or 3, on e.g. shall we cut funding to others? BUT they do not say who. This theme carries on throughout the form. Its a disgrace that someone has been paid to produce this. When I saw the age group who could fill in the form it was laughable - one minute they are spending £££s on trying to get parents to send kids to school, the next letting them fill the questionnaire in, what a joke. 3,000 people out of 350,000 have been spoken to and the council say 'that's a strong response!
Talk about communication! I urge readers to log on to Wirral Council website & see for yourself!

Just for the record, JAYDEE1, when people were asked at last May's elections, what exactly do YOU think it was they said they wanted?

This is as insulting an ignorant generalisation as I have ever read concerning the young people of Wirral.

The vast majority of children DO go to school here. And in addition to learning, they work hard for their communities, no more so than in the many fund-raising charitable efforts regularly they undertake and which are reported in the Globe and elsewhere.

You should be ashamed of yourself for disparaging these youngsters, red devil.

If they want to encourage younger people to comment, then go to the schools and speak in the assemblies, go to the 6th form colleges and ask their questions there as well. You could always try the Conway Park campus and at least they can walk there from there warm council offices!

Given the resources that goes into the Communication Department, the quality of the consultation questionnaire is really substandard. For something that is so important it is very amateurish. The questions are not very targeted and need to have more depth. The size and cost of this department is huge given it does not actually do anything positive for the community. What is going to happen to all the staff who manage the neighbourhood funding now that there is none? The last major consultation had 70 staff working on it, so this must be the same. It just seems so pointless.
